Every
challenge in life which we undertake for our enrichment
or betterment can be divided into specific stages. The
first stage, or the beginning, involves
the desire for change, the contemplation of the reward,
the personal evaluation of what can be gained, or the
inner projection of a positive outcome, For example, you
begin the diet and the fitness program because you can
imagine the thinner and more powerful you. There’s
a sincere desire for change. Stage two is the
battle. It involves changing habits, inconvenience,
challenges, suffering, and discomfort associated with
the acquisition of new skills and facing your fears. The
battle requires the employment of some underdeveloped
character traits: discipline, persistence, sacrifice,
patience, forbearance, tenacity, fortitude, and perseverance.
Trying to drag some of these old boys out of storage has
been known to cause a heart attack of the dream and knock
some people out of the battle. The battle always requires
effort no matter how long you’ve been involved in
it. The battle is always a battle. It consumes some people
and forges others on. If you stay in the battle long enough,
however, and your desire to overcome and win is strong
enough, a wonderful evolution takes place and you enter
into stage three. Stage three is not a decision.
In stage one you decided to change. In stage two you decided
to enter the battle. But you will never decide to enter
stage three. You can try or pretend to decide. But stage
three is a transition or an evolution. One day you just
realize that it has happened. There will be no date you
can point to and no hour that you can claim it happened.
Everything appears to be the same, but you know that you
are in stage three. The obstacles and fears in the past
that created such severe discomfort are now a part of
your daily routine, and though they still require effort
to overcome, you eagerly anticipate the challenge. Situations
that used to elicit evasive maneuvers are now attacked
head-on. Hiding from the fears used to be a tremendous
drain on your energy and your self-esteem. Now facing
the fear has become an equally strong source of energy
and a self-confidence builder. You no longer are afraid
of the battle. Posture has struck. You are now stimulated
by the battle because you realize the only way to lose
is not to enter the battle. You are now in stage three.
You love the battle.
